Suffer a Little First

May 20, 2009

What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly.  — Thomas Paine

As I encounter meaningful quotes I stop and think about them awhile. While most quotes are directed at the secular, material world, some can also be applied to the spiritual world. Most of us question why we have suffering at all, and why some people have so much more than others. It has been said that God only gives us as much pain and suffering as we can handle. And so back to Mr. Paine’s quote as I think it applies to suffering.

God’s gift of faith is just that, a gift. Some of us have it and some of us don’t. Those of us that do have it, if we don’t work to keep it, struggle to keep it as part of our lives, and suffer as a result of it, then it is just some cheap gift that we throw out on trash day or put in the next rummage sale. It has no value. We don’t esteem it. Our faith in God the Father has a cost. How much are we willing to pay for it?
