G.K. Chesterton

July 18, 2009

I’ve heard of him. He’s been on my reading list. But yet not until today have I really learned anything about Gilbert Keith Chesterton. Sure, I have admired his quotes on the Franklin Planner pages and added them to my collection of inspiring quotes. But who is he? Why did I wait so long to find out more about him?

In reading a brief biography about him, I have learned that he was a genius. A witty, eloquent man who argued on the side of common sense and the common man and charity and truth. Make that Truth, with a capital T. And because he was such a defender of the Truth history has done its best to try to forget about him. Here I am, in the process of reading Mere Christianity, by C.S. Lewis, but it is The Everlasting Man that inspired C.S. Lewis! In fact, according to this biography that I just read, Chesterton influenced many influential people of his day. We are in serious need of his influence today!

He wrote constantly, but yet he entertained children at birthday parties. Many of his books can be found as a free e-book, see His Mercy: eBooks in the side bar. And you can find a lot more about him at the American Chesterton Society.
