St. Teresa of Avila’s 500th Birthday Celebration Plans Under Way for 2015
According to Zenit, a commission of Discalced Carmelites is preparing for the celebration of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila, also known as St. Teresa of Jesus. St. Teresa was born in Spain on March 28, 1515. Due to illnesses and poor medical care, St. Teresa suffered greatly in her life. She turned to mental prayer and received many graces from God. She documented her spiritual life in a number of books. The Autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila: The Life of St. Teresa of Jesus and Interior Castle are two examples. She founded the convent of Discalced Carmelite Nuns in 1562. While she established many more convents in subsequent years, she also had many sufferings in dealings with people who opposed her reforms. The saint died October 15, 1582; her body is still incorrupt. St. Teresa is a doctor of the Church.
