Corpus Christi Processions – Ever Been?

June 5, 2010

I remember Corpus Christi Processions from my youth at my grandma’s parish in Detroit. The church was on a typical, large city block, and we  would process around the block. Numerous homes would have small altars on their porches where the procession would stop and pray. Then we moved away and the processions were just a memory. Why did they stop? Why didn’t our new church have a Corpus Christi procession?

Well, it still doesn’t, but last year I discovered that a neighboring parish in our vicariate does. It is a clustered parish of 3 country churches. They apparently have been practicing this devotion for a few years now. They used to process 12 miles, but now it is “only” 4 miles. (One of the churches was closed because it was so small.)

I heard a story about one of the 12 mile processions from a few years ago. As the group was processing down the country roads it passed several farms. At one place was a field of cows. All of the cows came up to the fence near the road and knelt down as Our Lord passed by in the monstrance! After the procession passed the cows stood up and went back to their grazing and other cow-ways. Amazing!

Tomorrow I plan to participate in this procession again. We walk and sing hymns and pray the rosary and the divine mercy chaplet. We stop from time to time to change over those who are carrying the canopy over the monstrance. They are predicting a lot of rain tonight and tomorrow morning… I hope and pray that Our Lord slows the rain down for our procession.

Here is an interesting entry on Corpus Christi, its history and spiritual meaning offering a broad perspective on various traditions and forms of piety. Certainly worth checking out: http://dstp.cba.pl/?p=1939 (this link, while it comes from an episcopal/anglican focus, it contains some interesting history on Corpus Christi. not really sure about the mindset of the authors on the subject of Corpus Christi as a whole, but the history of the devotion is worth a read.
