Vigil planned in support of family of ‘baby Joseph’ set to lose life support

LONDON, Ontario, February 18, 2011 ( – As thousands rally behind one-year-old Joseph Maraachli after the Ontario Superior Court ruled that his life support will be removed Monday against the wishes of his parents, a group of locals from London have organized a silent prayer vigil for Joseph and his family.

The vigil will take place at 9 a.m. on Monday outside Victoria Hospital, at Wellington and Commissioners.

The family’s struggle has drawn international headlines in the last 24 hours amidst fears that the court decision facilitates a system where doctors are authorized to force life and death decisions on patients.  Over 1,300 people have joined a Facebook page to “Save baby Joseph.”

Joseph has been on life support at London’s Victoria Hospital since October.  The doctors gave him no chance of recovery, so his parents, Moe Maraachli and Sana Nader, asked them to perform a tracheotomy, which would allow them to take Joseph home.  But the doctors refused, saying the procedure was too risky.

In January, the Consent and Capacity Board of Ontario sided with the hospital, and a date for removing Joseph’s respirator was set.

The family was able to hold it off by filing an appeal, but on Thursday Superior Court Justice Helen Rady held up the board’s decision, allowing the doctors to remove Joseph’s life support on Monday at 10 a.m.

“There’s no more humanity.  There’s no more chance.  I’ve tried everything for him.  No more appeals, nothing,” Moe Maraachli, Joseph’s father, told LifeSiteNews Thursday.

“I asked them: why not send him to Windsor and let him die at home?” he continued.  “They said they will give him injection, but I don’t want to.”

“I ask God, and maybe he breathe,” he added.

“I don’t get it.  There’s nothing here that I get.  It makes no sense,” said Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition.  “What is in this for the hospital and the doctor?  Why would they bother doing this?”

“Is it that they want to simply say, we have control?” he asked.  “If it’s about their control, then we’re in serious trouble.  They now control when someone lives and when someone dies, and who makes those decisions, and how those decisions are made.”

Schadenberg said this would be “worse than the death panel concept that’s being debated in the US.  It really is, it’s much worse.”

“That has serious repercussions, because you simply cannot trust the moral authority of the health care institution or the doctors,” he added.

Why can’t he be transferred to a Catholic hospital? There must be one in London, Ontario…

remember all the “whys” with terri schiavo? its the same thing here, only it is even more perplexing because there is no monetary settlement that an ex-husband is trying to get. the latest articles are saying now that baby Joseph’s parents can’t even be in the room alone with him! very, very sad!
Jesus please help this little boy and his family!

First of all, tell whoever this Schandenberg is, the death panels were a fantasy of certain right wing idiots such as Sarah Palin, there is no such thing. Second, the hospital I believe is clearly trying to prevent further pain and suffering to this child, which is what WILL happen if the parents try to take him home. Are they going to purchase all the hospital equipment to take with him? If they want him to die surrounded by people who love him, why not have all those people come to his hospital room; And, disconnecting tubes and etc from someone who is already dead is not euthanasia. There are sure a lot of organizations trying to get their names in this issue, aren’t there? Silent vigils, euthansia coalistion, give me a break, they are all in it for something. If God wants this baby to live, he will live with or without the breathign tube. These parents are just prolonging his agony. But yes, the security guards need to back off. The hospital is probably afraid they will try to steal the baby, thereby causing it more pain and suffering. No place can I find out what happened in the first place. Give the poor baby peace.

this baby is misdiagnosed as in a “vegetative state.” he is responding to stimuli even tho something is wrong with him. how the heck are they preventing pain and suffering by disconnecting his life support and then injecting him with a drug to kill him. a life is a life, a precious gift from God. the child has responsible parents and the hospital and the state have terminated their parental rights! on what grounds?? the poor baby and the family will have peace if the bureaucrats get out of the way.

The baby is clearly vegetative! Look at the video. His eyes are fixed. His face has no expression. The movements are either abnormal myoclonic jerks or spinal reflexes.

        Don’t be so gullible.

I believe this baby Joseph should be given every chance to live as long as God will allow him to stay here. Please someone, anyone have a heart and help this child so that he can live and die with dignity. My prayers are with Baby Joseph and his family. I am praying to St Joseph the Guardian of the Holy Family for this family. My love and prayers Mary Johnson NJ USA

The hospital said the family could take their baby home but would not perform a trach, because it would cause infections, and his illness is terminal. Not to mention all the other children that COULD have a chance to live, unlike baby Joseph if only they had the attention he does.

if God wanted this baby to live, he would WITHOUT a tube stuck down his throat. Removing an unnatural thing from a persons body is not euthanasia. The right thing to do is to let this baby return to God in peace.
