The Theology of Wellness – What is it and how does it apply to me?

June 22, 2013

This morning’s Gospel was from the sixth chapter of Matthew.

101_1644Jesus said to his disciples:
“No one can serve two masters.
He will either hate one and love the other,
or be devoted to one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and mammon.“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,
what you will eat or drink,
or about your body, what you will wear.
Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
Look at the birds in the sky;
they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns,
yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are not you more important than they?
Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?
Why are you anxious about clothes?
Learn from the way the wild flowers grow.
They do not work or spin.
But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor
was clothed like one of them.
If God so clothes the grass of the field,
which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow,
will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?
So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’
or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’
All these things the pagans seek.
Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.
But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given you besides.
Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself.
Sufficient for a day is its own evil.”

Jesus tells us not to worry about what we are to eat or drink, and that the body is more than clothing. We must seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and then God will provide everything we need.

Indeed, God will provide and he does. But, like an old, wise priest said many years ago, God does provide for the birds, but look how hard they must work for that food. And so must we work for our food. Sure, not everyone can have a garden, but we still have access to the food that God provides. What kind of food does God provide? Well, it’s definitely not Mountain Dew and Cheez-its! God provides real food, and preparing real food takes effort.

God gave us this body to live in for our time here on earth. We aren’t to worry about it, but we still must take care of it, after all, it is a gift from Him.

We have many health voices in the world today, each telling us the “best” way to get and stay healthy, but there are so many aspects to health that no one way gets us there. As Christians we must focus on God first, because spiritual health is the beginning of physical health. We are a body and a soul. They are a unit. A sick body puts anguish on the soul, and a sick soul puts stress on the body.

There is so much emphasis on having the perfect body these days. What about having a perfect soul? God gave us exactly what we need to live this life well. First we need to turn to him, then get to know him, and then we will discover what we need to do to live the best earthly life possible.

If any of this is interesting to you, I’d like to know your thoughts since  I am in the process of writing a book on Christian wellness. Thanks!
